If you've always been fascinated by mixed martial arts, you may be interested in taking up the pastime. In this situation, you may have heard about BJJ, or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, which is becoming increasingly popular across Australia these days. But as with many people, you may want to know how quickly you can progress and what's the first major level of achievement? In other words, how quickly can you get a different coloured belt so that you have some mastery and are making progress?

The Belt System

Mixed martial arts rely on a coloured belt system to show the student's proficiency at that time. In BJJ, the first level of achievement is signified by a blue belt. Certainly, all practitioners start with a white belt and will eventually move all the way up to a black belt if they persevere. So, in other words, the blue belt is the first promotion and is something to aim at for newbies.

In the Eyes of the Coach

Remember that there are no "exams" as such, but promotion depends on how well you perform in your coach's eyes. So, you need to convince them that you're ready to wear a blue belt, and it might take some time for you to get to that point.

What You Need to Bear in Mind

If you aspire to a blue belt, you need to be able to handle yourself well on the mat. You need to be a responsible individual who can then be someone that newcomers look up to, just as you may have done when you started out.

Winning Attributes

A coach may be looking for some specific attributes before they can award the blue belt. They'll need to see that you are efficient during a session and able to take on partners of different levels for several rounds. You need to understand how you should move your body in relation to what the other partner does and with regard to the mat. You must also know when to defend, attack, and be patient at certain times. You need to have a relative mastery of the tactical and technical moves associated with BJJ to move forward.

Tempering Enthusiasm

Always manage expectations, and don't try to rush the process to get your blue belt in record time. Much will depend on your physical conditioning, but your attitude will probably be the most important consideration.

What to Do Next

So, gather some more details about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and talk with other experts who have been involved for some time. They'll help you set your goals and enjoy participating in this fantastic pastime.
